Fallingwater, Cedar Point, Chicago and Minneapolis

It was going to be a long drive from Cape Cod to Fallingwater, Pensilvania so we decided to spend a night somewhere along the way.  We found another State park about half way and set up camp.  Again it was a cold night but we brought some extra blankets to keep us warm so we were fine.

The following day we headed off excited at the prospect of finally seeing Fallingwater that afternoon.  Fallingwater is a famous home designed by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright.  Bryce had studied the building during his time at university and some aspects of my parents house was based on the home.  Due to this we both had reasons for wanting to visit.

It really, really was worth the visit.  The home and setting was breathtaking.  A visit there has to be on everyone’s bucket list.  Every room in the house was perfect and the decor just so.  We would live there if we could!   It was one of the most amazing places we had ever seen.  We are truly glad we added the visit in as part of of our trip.

We spent another night camping near Fallingwater before heading off again with a quick detour through Pittsburg for a picnic lunch.  From Pittsburg we continued our journey to Sandusky, Ohio – the home of Cedar Point.  Cedar Point is one of the best roller coaster parks in the world.  It contains 17 very fast and very scary roller coasters .  It was so much fun!  Some of them were so intense including the Top Thrill Dragster which got up to speeds of 120 mph (approx. 193 km).  I think on one ride called Millennium Force I may have blacked out for just a second it was so fast – no kidding  - everything went grey for a moment.  After going on nine “normal” roller coasters we decided to go on a roller coaster where you stand up instead of sitting.   Bryce felt very ill after that unusual ride so he had to sit the rest out.  He inisted I kept going and I think I ended up going on about 13 out of the 17 roller coasters.  We want to go back and I think we will!  We love roller coasters!

The following morning Bryce felt a lot better so we hit the road again towards Chicago, Illinois.  We found a campsite outside of Chicago in Dunes State Park right on Lake Michigan.  We’ve never seen a lake so big – it was like the ocean!  It was an awesome place to camp.  There was a train station nearby so every day we took the hour and a half journey into the city to explore.  It gave me a chance to read my book while Bryce worked on his CV in preparation for Canada.

Cloud Gate

In Chicago we were able to view the amazing Cloud Gate reflective sculpture plus we did an architecture river boat tour.  Bryce loves architecture so he had a ball on the tour.  I also got to taste the famous Chicago deep dish pizza.  We were lucky the place we went to had gluten free pizza so Bryce was happy too.  It was the first place in America where we have actually found gluten free pizza.  Chicago was a fantastic city and we had a great two days exploring.

From Chicago we continued our journey with our next stop being Minneapolis, Minnesota.  While there we went to the biggest mall in America called Mall of America (not very original).  We hadn’t been to the movies since we started saving for this amazing trip so that was what we decided to do!  We ended up seeing the new moving Gravity.  It was really good.

That’s all for this blog – there will only be one blog on the USA after this one.  We’re sad for your trip to end but still really excited for what’s to come in Canada.
